On March 25th,we celebrated Scottish Heritage Days at Fort King George in Darien, Ga. Fort George was built in 1721 by the Governor of South Carolina as a defense against the Spanish from Florida. It was abandoned in 1728 and refortified in 1734 by Gen. James Oglethorpe and a group of Scots. The military presence was supplied by an independent company of the 42d Highland Regiment; the famed Black Watch. The industrious Scottmen turned Darien into the principle lumber exportation point in Georgia.

On October 8, Suze the children and I teamed up with the Coastal Heritage Society in Savannah and the cannon crew from Fort Morris Historic Site to inagurate the new battlefield park site commemorating the Siege of Savannah in 1779 during the Revolutionary War.Battlefield Park is on the same piece of ground as the original Springhill Redoubt that was the center of the battle. Portions of the original trench were found during the initial phase of construction. The Costal Heritage Foundation plans to develope the park with the addition of a 1000 square foot recreation of the redoubt and a yearly event to celebrate the memory of the battle. The Foundation also manages Fort Jackson and The Roundhouse Railroad Museum. Check them out at http://www.chsgeorgia.org.Pictures will be posted later.
