25th,we celebrated Scottish Heritage Days at Fort King George in Darien, Ga. Fort George was built in 1721 by the Governor of South Carolina as a defense against the Spanish from Florida. It was abandoned in 1728 and refortified in 1734 by Gen. James Oglethorpe and a group of Scots. The military presence was supplied by an independent company of the 42d Highland Regiment; the famed Black Watch. Portions of the original trench were found during the initial phase of construction. The Costal Heritage Foundation plans to develope the park with the addition of a 1000 square foot recreation of the redoubt and a yearly event to celebrate the memory of the battle.
